02 / THE CONSTRAINT — CONCURRENCY & PEAK LOAD
THE LOAD ARRIVESALL AT ONCE.
A fan platform spends most of its life almost idle and is judged entirely on the ninety minutes when it is not. Kick-off, a goal, a ticket release and a transfer announcement all produce the same shape of traffic: a near-vertical spike against a system that was comfortable a second earlier.
Average capacity is therefore meaningless as a design target. What matters is the behaviour of the system at its worst minute of the season, and what it degrades to rather than whether it degrades.
We design the failure mode deliberately: which features shed load first, what is cached and for how long, and what a fan sees when the ticketing provider behind the app is the thing that has fallen over.
03 / What it means in code
FOUR DECISIONS.
SPIKE PROFILE
Capacity modelled against the worst minute, not the average day.
GRACEFUL DEGRADATION
Non-critical features shed load before the core experience does.
CACHE STRATEGY
Read-heavy content served from the edge with explicit invalidation on live events.
THIRD-PARTY FAILURE
Ticketing and streaming providers assumed to fail during peak, and handled.

Most engagements in this sector draw on more than one discipline. The combination is decided by the constraint above rather than by a service menu.
